About US
WHO WE ARE
We are the Abate family. 8 years ago our sandy feet stepped onto Playa Colorado on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast for the first time. Think year-round offshore breezes, crystal clear water and white sand beaches. With our own family history built on surfing, surf schools and seeking out surf adventure from the shores of Brazil to the coastline of California’s USA, it didn’t take long for us to feel the draw of Playa Colorado in this undiscovered paradise.
Years later and barrels of fun down the waves of time, we’ve established our home here in Hacienda Iguana, a gated community that fronts onto Playa Colorado and every day, through Playa Colorado Surfing School, we’re proudly giving people the opportunity in life to become surfers they’ve always wanted to be.
Affiliated with our award-winning San Diego surf school, Pacific Surf, our dynamic team of certified surf instructors follow the surf seasons between California and Nicaragua offering private, semi-private and group lessons to all walks of life. Here at Playa Colorado Surfing School, we will help you bring out the confidence you have within, to not only ride the wave with skill, but become the surfer you want to be.
Learn to surf today, ride the wave, and feel the love of Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast from the best view possible- riding the board!

Deceptive advertising and poor communication/web site - First, parking is VERY difficult to find so be prepared for that. Second, we were given directions to go to the shop. However, when we got to the... read more shop they were closed and there was a sign on the door to go to the beach across the street where they had a canopy set up. Could have given us those directions in the beginning. Website advertises 90 minute lessons. HOWEVER, that 90 minutes includes the time to change into the wet suit and get ready for the lesson. Even at that we were about 10 minutes late starting. but they counted the lesson as starting on time. Then ended lesson 15 minutes early so could return the surf board and change out of the wet suit. Total lesson less than an hour. Also, had rented boards for an additional hour. BUT, unknown to us (no information on web site) had to switch to a different wet suit and had to walk a block over from the beach, get the surf board, and walk back. Like a dummy I assumed the board that we were renting would be one that we used for the lessons. I don't know that any of the other schools are any different. Just want people to know and understand you may be paying for 90 minutes but you get an actual hour or less OF LESSON. Did not use the rental and did NOT get a refund ($15 for an hour per board).
